Antal Szerb, one of the most important Hungarian writers and literary personalities of the 20th century was born on May 1, 1901 in Budapest. He wrote his first poems as a student and after graduation he studied Hungarian and German obtaining a doctorate in 1924. His first works were of historical nature but in the 1930s he turned gradually towards mysticism and irony. Journey by Moonlight is probably the most important novel he wrote and it was translated to several languages. In 2004, the translation of the novel was on top of the bestsellers' list in Germany and Austria. |
